The Calder Stones are six carved Neolithic sandstone monoliths, the remnants of a prehistoric burial tomb, and they are now displayed indoors at the Mansion House in Calderstones Park in south Liverpool. The permanent exhibition, The Calderstones Story, takes visitors from the late Stone Age through the history of the house and the park, including its links to the Cunard shipping line, a wartime hero dog and John Lennon. The carvings include spirals, concentric circles and footprints, which give younger visitors plenty to look for. The surrounding park is a large green space with a lake, ducks and geese, so a visit can be paired with time outdoors. The Reader charity runs the building, which also has a café and a bookshop. A free digital trail of the park is available by scanning QR codes on posts around the grounds.
