The Victoria Gallery & Museum sits in the red brick Victoria Building on the University of Liverpool campus and is free to enter. Its galleries show historic and contemporary art alongside the university's scientific, medical and natural history collections, so there is something to look at for children as well as adults. The changing exhibition programme brings in work from artists in Liverpool and further afield, and the museum runs workshops, talks and events for different ages, which can give a family something hands-on to join in. Guided tours of the building are offered on some afternoons, and the Waterhouse Cafe on the ground floor makes a convenient place for a break. Visits typically take an hour or two, and the building itself, with its tiled interiors and clock tower, is part of the appeal.
