The Williamson Art Gallery & Museum is a single-storey gallery in Birkenhead, opened in 1928, that holds Wirral's art collection. Families can wander the galleries at their own pace, looking at paintings, sculpture, ship models and maritime objects, and see the largest public collection of Della Robbia pottery in the country. A rolling programme of temporary exhibitions runs through the year, and the gallery also hosts workshops, events and occasional live music. The gallery describes itself as family-friendly, with activities for children on visits and creative workshops aimed at the whole family. A café serves light meals and cakes, and there is a free car park nearby. Because the whole visitor route is on one level, it suits buggies and pushchairs as well as older children who enjoy looking closely at objects and pictures.
