The North West Museum of Road Transport occupies a former tram and bus depot in the centre of St Helens and gathers a large collection of historic road vehicles from across the North West. Buses are the main focus, with municipal examples from several local operators, and there are also classic cars, motorbikes, vans and vintage fire engines, many owned by members of a local classic car association. Smaller exhibits and a model railway layout add to the visit. Families with younger children tend to enjoy seeing the big vehicles up close, and the museum runs themed event days through the year, including a Santa weekend before Christmas with activities for children and vintage bus rides when running days are held. It suits transport enthusiasts and families looking for an easy, inexpensive afternoon out. The museum is run largely by volunteers, who also maintain the fleet in workshops at the back of the building.
