The Battle of the Atlantic Story is a museum at Woodside ferry terminal on the Wirral side of the Mersey, built around U-534, a Type IXC/40 German wartime submarine raised from the Kattegat seabed in 1993. The boat has been cut into sections so visitors can look into her pressure hull and get a sense of how cramped life was for her crew. Alongside the submarine, the museum plans to show personal belongings recovered from the wreck, such as letters, diaries, photographs and board games, and to tell the wider story of the Atlantic campaign from the German side as well as the Allied one. Families interested in history, ships and the Second World War are the natural audience, and older children are likely to get the most from the displays. The museum is not yet open to the public; its stated opening year is 2027, so check the website before planning a trip.
