The Williamson Tunnels Heritage Centre sits in the old stable yard in Edge Hill and offers a different kind of day out: a guided walk through part of a labyrinth of brick and sandstone tunnels dug in the early 1800s under the direction of tobacco merchant Joseph Williamson. Tours last around 45 minutes and take visitors down into the passageways and chambers, with the guide explaining how the network was built and what it was for. Above ground, the exhibition area tells the story of Williamson, one of the city's most eccentric characters, and there is a cafe and toilets. The tunnel route involves steps and uneven surfaces and is not suitable for wheelchair users, so it suits children who are comfortable on stairs and in confined spaces. Tours are run by a volunteer society and must be booked in advance.
