The Ashmolean is the University of Oxford's museum of art and archaeology, founded in 1683 and one of the oldest public museums in Britain. Its galleries cover a huge span of time, from Egyptian mummies and ancient sculpture to Anglo-Saxon treasures, Minoan objects and modern art, spread over several floors around a central atrium. For families the welcome desk offers trails and explorer packs, and the museum publishes a family guide to help children find objects that suit them. The permanent collections are free to walk around, so a visit can be short or stretch into a long afternoon, and there is a cafe for a break. Lifts serve all floors and there are accessible toilets and baby changing, which helps with pushchairs. Temporary exhibitions are ticketed and can need booking, so check what is on before you travel.
