Swinford Museum sits in a 17th-century cottage in the centre of the village of Filkins, close to the Cotswold edge of West Oxfordshire. It was set up in the 1930s and holds a collection of local domestic, agricultural, trade and craft tools that gives a picture of how a rural community lived and worked. The rooms are small, so the visit suits families who enjoy looking closely at old objects and asking questions. Special exhibitions have been held in past seasons, and the museum also keeps a photographic record of the village buildings, past and present, which older children can compare with what they see on a walk. Group visits are welcomed and can include a guided walk around the village with a cream tea, which makes a gentle half-day out for a school or club. The museum opens only on certain days each season, so check the current programme before setting out.
