What’s there
- Free parking
No car park adjoining the museum. Dorchester has one free public car park in Bridge End, across the road from the Abbey and Museum; limited free parking is also on the High Street and side streets, including single disabled spaces.
Only facilities we’ve confirmed are listed — anything missing here we simply haven’t checked, rather than know to be absent.
Dorchester Abbey Museum sits in the old Abbey Guest House beside Dorchester Abbey, in the village of Dorchester-on-Thames south of Oxford. It is a compact museum, so a visit suits a curious older child or a family with an hour to spare rather than a full day out. The displays cover prehistoric stone tools, the Iron Age village and earthworks, a Roman model house with objects from a local dig, and the monastic history of the abbey. Children can look for the Roman and medieval finds, and there is a display of artefacts linked to TV dramas filmed in the village. Next door, the Cloister Gallery holds a permanent display of carved medieval stonework from the abbey, which pairs well with a walk around the church. Entry is free, with donations welcome, and the museum is open seasonally in the afternoons from Easter to the end of September.
