The History of Science Museum occupies the Old Ashmolean, a 1683 building that is considered the oldest surviving purpose-built museum building in the world. Its three floors hold a large collection of early scientific instruments, including astrolabes, sundials, globes, microscopes and telescopes, and the museum is known for its Einstein blackboard. Families can wander the galleries at their own pace, follow the museum map on a phone, or pick up the easy read guide, which helps younger visitors and those who prefer a visual route. The museum also runs a digital trail for families and school groups that links it with other Oxford gardens, libraries and museums. Only a fraction of the collection is on display at any time, so the changing temporary displays give regular reasons to return. Admission is free and donations are welcome.
