A free museum of historic instruments, manuscripts and portraits run by the Royal Academy of Music, which describes itself as the oldest conservatoire in Britain. Visitors move between galleries of stringed instruments and keyboards, including an early virginal from around 1600 and a 1920 Steinway grand piano, and can look through glass-fronted workshops where instruments are tuned and repaired. Live demonstrations on the historic pianos bring the displays to life, and the public programme includes lecture-recitals, workshops and family activity sessions. The museum is compact, so a visit suits children curious about music or history and can be combined with a walk in nearby Regent's Park. Temporary exhibitions change through the year, so check what is on before going.
