The Charterhouse is a historic site in Charterhouse Square, a short walk from Farringdon and Barbican. It began as a medieval monastery and later became a Tudor mansion, a school and an almshouse, and it is still home to a community of residents. A free museum display traces the site's long history through objects, maps and archive material, and the chapel and shop are open at the same hours without booking. Families can book a guided tour of the historic rooms and courtyards, or a tour led by one of the residents, which gives a fuller picture of the buildings. The gardens are a quiet green space in the middle of the city, and there are seasonal events such as garden tours and candlelit evening tours in the colder months. A family learning programme and sessions for schools and children with special educational needs are also run from the site.
