Redbridge Museum & Heritage Centre is the local museum and archive service for the London Borough of Redbridge, housed on the second floor of the central library in Ilford. The permanent exhibition was redeveloped and reopened in 2024 with input from local residents and schools. Displays move through the area's story, from Ice Age, Iron Age and Roman remains and interactive activities about medieval manors, to the rural past, grand mansions, and the orphanages and asylums of the 1800s and 1900s. A section on the Fairlop Fair and the Woodford Cycle Meet is a good hook for children. The museum runs a regular programme of exhibitions and family activities, and it also offers free school sessions. The Heritage Centre next to it holds local history and family history records. Visits suit older children who enjoy history, and younger visitors will enjoy the hands-on displays and a short, easy outing.
