Portencross Castle is a scheduled ancient monument standing on a rock by the sea on the North Ayrshire coast. The tall tower, with its vaulted basement, great hall and turnpike stair, has been conserved by a local volunteer group, so families can climb through the building and imagine its past as a home of the Boyd family. The castle sits in a small harbour village with a pier and views across to the islands of the Clyde and Arran, which makes a simple seaside outing with children easy to fold into a walk along the shore. The site is seasonal rather than open every day, so it suits a planned visit in spring or summer. The castle is also available to hire for private events, which means it is a lively place at times. Visitors should expect a historic building with stairs and uneven floors rather than a purpose-built attraction.

We normally open for the Easter weekend and for the local Easter holiday period. Then we open weekends in May and June, plus Mondays for local long weekends. We open daily in July and August, and on weekends only for September.
