Ardress House is a historic farmhouse that was remodelled into a Georgian home, set on an estate of orchards, meadows and a cobbled farmyard beside the River Tall. Families can look round the ground floor rooms to see the plasterwork and furnishings, then head out to the farmyard, where there are farm animals to meet and old agricultural buildings such as a dairy, a smithy and a threshing barn to look around. The garden has a terraced rose area, and the short Lady's Mile walk runs through woodland with old trees to spot. The orchards are the highlight in autumn, when the Trust runs apple-themed family events with apple pressing, apple picking and cookery demonstrations. The site is quieter than many larger National Trust properties, which suits a relaxed visit.
