Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology (MAA)

The Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (MAA) is one of the University of Cambridge's free museums, right on Downing Street in the city centre. Inside you'll find two million years of human history: the earliest African stone tools, recent Cambridgeshire archaeological finds, and objects collected during Captain Cook's voyages to the Pacific. There are three floors of galleries - the Clarke Gallery (ground floor) with Cambridge archaeology, plus the World Cultures Gallery and the Andrews Gallery upstairs - and the Li Ka Shing Gallery for temporary exhibitions. Families can pick up a free trail from reception (the Top 9 trail is available in six languages), download a Family Trail or a Trail for Children with drawing and colouring activities, and there are regular family-friendly events and workshops. Admission is free and you can simply turn up - no booking needed. Baby changing is available and breastfeeding is welcomed in all museum spaces. The shop stocks fair trade and ethically sourced gifts, toys and souvenirs. Note: there is no cafe on site and eating is not permitted in the galleries, but the outdoor courtyard and nearby green spaces work well for picnics, and the Whale Cafe at the Museum of Zoology is just across Downing Street.
