Aldeburgh Beach

Aldeburgh Beach is the sweeping shingle beach at the heart of this Suffolk coastal town, backed by a promenade and rows of pastel-coloured 19th-century villas, just a short walk from the High Street. Predominantly shingle, the beach slopes steeply down to the sea past the moored fishing boats, with the daily catch and shellfish sold from huts on the promenade and a kiosk near Moot Hall serving drinks, snacks and ice creams.

Families come to paddle and skim stones at the water's edge, play beach games, and finish with the town's famous fish and chips followed by ice cream from one of the delis and cafes. Walk north along the beach to find the iconic four-metre-high Scallop sculpture by Maggi Hambling, a tribute to composer Benjamin Britten, who walked this shore most days. Public toilets are available at Aldeburgh Fort Green.

Please note there is no lifeguard patrol on Aldeburgh Beach, and dogs are only allowed on certain parts of the beach - check local signage. The beach is also home to a rare coastal vegetated shingle habitat, so please keep off the plants and any fenced areas. Seafront car parking is provided by East Suffolk Council cashless pay-and-display car parks.
