Cadw Carreg Cennen Castle

Carreg Cennen is a dramatic castle ruin perched on a limestone crag 90m above the River Cennen, with sweeping views over the Carmarthenshire countryside. Probably built by Edward I's baron John Giffard in the late 13th century, the castle features an elaborate barbican with twin towers. The main draw is the natural cave cut into the cliff-face, with a vaulted passage running through it — though it's very dark, sometimes narrow overhead, and the steep stepped descent is slippery underfoot. The site sits on a working farm with livestock. There's an on-site exhibition, gift shop and light refreshments. Ground-floor levels are dog-friendly on leads.
