Cilgerran Castle is one of the most spectacularly sited castles in Wales. Its two great round towers loom high above the deep gorge of the River Teifi and the fast-flowing stream of the Plysog. Probably first built as a ringwork castle in 1108 by the Norman adventurer Gerald of Windsor, it was rebuilt as 'an ornate castle of mortar and stones' by William Marshal, earl of Pembroke, in 1223 - after which it never again fell to the Welsh.
Take the thrilling wall-walk from the east tower for dramatic views over the river gorge. Entry is free: the castle is open and unstaffed, so explore the ruins, dry moat and picnic area at your own pace. Dogs on short leads are welcome on the ground floor levels of the site. Please note the towers are reached by original stone steps that can be slippery and uneven, and may close at short notice due to adverse weather.
Open all year round (1 April - 31 March), 10:00-16:00 daily. Closed 24-26 December and 1 January. The castle towers may close at short notice due to adverse weather / health & safety concerns.
