Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum

Explore the atmospheric 18th-century townhouse where Dr Samuel Johnson, author of A Dictionary of the English Language, was born in 1709. Five floors of rooms tell the story of Johnson's life from childhood to national celebrity, packed with family-friendly fun: follow the free cat trail inspired by Johnson's cat Hodge, try writing with a real quill and ink in Michael Johnson's workroom, dress up in Georgian costume, play with the hand-made toys and puzzles, and hunt for words in the replica dictionary. A short film suitable for all ages plays on the first floor, and free colouring sheets make the perfect souvenir. Admission is free and donations are welcome. The museum is open every day with seasonal hours. Note: the Grade I listed building has no lift, so some floors are accessible by stairs only, and there is no toilet on site (public toilets are nearby).
