Charged car park outside the south entrance (~100m from the Abbey), run by Scarborough Borough Council. Accessible set-down + a few accessible spaces at the visitor centre entrance; further accessible spaces in the main car park.

The ruins of Whitby Abbey crown a clifftop above the historic fishing port of Whitby. The headland has hosted St Hild's Anglo-Saxon monastery, the great medieval abbey and a Stuart mansion. A museum at the site, packed with objects and stories, explores the headland's history through listening posts, peep-holes and animations. These tell how St Hild turned snakes to stone, how Anglo-Saxon Caedmon became a poet, how the lost abbey bells are still heard beneath the waves, and how a real shipwreck helped inspire Dracula, which has made Whitby the 'Goth capital' of England.
