A red-brick mansion home to the Hyde Parker family for 240 years, with rooms containing Beatrix Potter sketches, naval paintings and Chinese porcelain. The house was devastated by fire in 1942 and rebuilt. Walled gardens feature herbaceous borders, woodland, topiary, espaliered fruit trees and a reflecting pond. A 17th-century octagonal Tudor banqueting house overlooks the village green. Acres of parkland with walking routes pass resident cattle and sheep and offer views of the Suffolk countryside. The tea-room serves hot and cold drinks, cakes, ice creams, lunches and cream teas. A second-hand bookshop is on site.

Questions parents ask
- Can I manage Melford Hall with a buggy, or with both a toddler and an older child at once?
- The hall is buggy friendly and step-free access is confirmed. Ground floor of the house and parts of the garden are accessible, though some areas have narrow corridors. Manual wheelchairs are available to borrow if needed.
- How long should we allow for a visit?
- This depends on what you want to do. The parkland has walking routes including a 3.75-mile circular walk or longer countryside walks of up to 6 miles. For the house and gardens alone, a few hours would be typical for a family visit.
- Is there a café, and can we bring a picnic?
- A tea-room serves hot and cold drinks, cakes, ice creams, lunches and cream teas, with both indoor and outdoor seating. The page does not confirm a designated picnic area, though the extensive gardens and parkland may be suitable.
- Does bad weather ruin a visit?
- Much of Melford Hall is outdoors – the gardens, parkland and walking trails – so wet weather would affect these. However, the house itself and tea-room provide indoor alternatives on rainy days.
- Is there parking, and how far is it from the car park to the house?
- Free parking is available, with 5 accessible spaces by the visitor welcome gazebo. A shuttle bus is available to drop off visitors at the front door of the house and return to the car park.
