St Andrews Castle was a bishop's palace, fortress and state prison across 450 years of history. The bottle dungeon, one of medieval Britain's most infamous castle prisons, is open to visitors; Cardinal Beaton's body was held here after his assassination. The brutal siege of 1546–47 left visible traces: a remarkable mine and countermine dug into the rock near the battlements. The Hamilton Façade showcases refined Renaissance architecture. An audio guide is available on your own smartphone or on site devices.
