Hermitage Castle is a roofless medieval stronghold in remote Scottish border country, known for a history of intrigue, murder, torture and treason. The castle was the "guardhouse of the bloodiest valley in Britain", targeted for 400 years for its strategic role controlling the Scottish Middle March. Visitors can explore the formidable ruin at leisure and take part in a fact-finding quiz as they wander through the castle, imagining the brutal struggles for power that raged along the Anglo-Scottish border in the later Middle Ages.

Open season 1 April - 30 September, daily 10am-4pm (last entry 30 min before close). Closed 1 October - 31 March per HES plan-your-visit page.
