Melrose Abbey is a magnificent ruin founded by David I in 1136 as Scotland's first Cistercian monastery. Though damaged during medieval conflicts with England, it was rebuilt in the 1380s and remained in use until the Protestant Reformation of 1560. The abbey church displays some of Britain's finest late 1300s church architecture. Look for the famous carved bagpipe-playing pig among the stonework, and in the chapter house, a small memorial marks the spot where Robert the Bruce's heart is believed to be buried. Expert talks run daily, covering topics including Robert the Bruce, St Cuthbert and the Black Douglases. An audio guide is included with entry.
