One of four great abbeys built in the Scottish Borders in the 1100s, Jedburgh Abbey was constructed over more than 70 years and displays an unusual mix of Romanesque and early Gothic architecture. The remains of ancillary buildings show where the brethren ate and slept, and you can walk through the vast kitchen and cellar ranges that fed the community. A recreated cloister garden grows the same herbs once used in the medieval abbey. The visitor centre displays exceptional early Christian artefacts that pre-date the abbey by several centuries. An audio guide is available.
Open year-round: summer (1 Apr-30 Sep) daily 9.30am-5pm; winter (1 Oct-31 Mar) daily 10am-4pm. Closed 25 & 26 Dec and 1 & 2 Jan (closes 2pm on 24 Dec).
