Raystede Animal Centre

Raystede is an RSPCA-run animal welfare charity in East Sussex, home to rescued and rehabilitated animals who are nursed back to health and rehomed. It is a working animal rescue and welfare centre rather than a zoo or petting farm, and visitors are welcome to wander the peaceful site to see the animals in their care.

On a visit you may spot goats, horses, donkeys, ponies and sheep grazing in the fields, rabbits, guinea pigs, mice and chinchillas in the small animal area, tortoises and terrapins (including the Project Terrapin sanctuary), and chickens, ducks, geese and exotic birds in the aviary and lakes areas. The aviaries close at 2pm each day for the welfare of the birds, and the kennels and cattery are not open to visitors.

Entry is free, but booking a free ticket in advance is essential - visitor numbers are limited for the welfare of the animals. There is a free guided tour every day at 11.30am (weather permitting). Cafe Raystede serves breakfast from 8.30am and refreshments until mid-afternoon, and there is a pet goods shop and charity shop on site. A playground with outdoor seating keeps little ones entertained, and dogs on leads are welcome on the dog-friendly trails.

Raystede is on the B2192 between Ringmer and Halland, opposite the East Sussex Gliding Club, and is open 10am-4pm every day (closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day).
