The Old Man of Storr is an iconic rock pinnacle on the Isle of Skye, formed millions of years ago by an ancient landslip. The Trotternish Ridge is a 19 mile escarpment of hard volcanic rock layered above weaker Jurassic sediments. Local legend connects the pinnacle to a buried giant or sees an old man's face in the rock formation. The site is subject to intermittent rockfall; large rocks came off the cliff face in summer 2004 and rest at the base of the pinnacle.
