Walk among the megaliths of an extraordinary cross-shaped setting of stones erected 5,000 years ago. The Calanais Standing Stones predate Stonehenge and were an important place for ritual activity for at least 2,000 years. Archaeologists believe they may have functioned as an astronomical observatory: every 18.6 years, the moon skims especially low over the southern hills in a pattern that could have given authority to those who predicted it. The site is managed in partnership with local charity Urras Nan Tursachan, who operate the visitor centre.
