Lake Vyrnwy (Llyn Efyrnwy) is a stunning reservoir and nature reserve in Powys, Wales, built in the 1880s and set amidst 23,000 acres of moorland and forest. Managed by Hafren Dyfrdwy (Severn Trent Water) and the RSPB, it offers a wide range of family-friendly outdoor activities. The site has a visitor hub with a cafe (open Tue-Sun 10:00-16:00), toilets, and a shop. Children can enjoy the playground and the RSPB's seven waymarked trails ranging from 2-9km through woodland and moorland habitats. The lake is popular for sailing, watersports, cycling, horse riding, and fishing. The RSPB nature reserve features bird hides where you can spot peregrine falcons, pied flycatchers, and wood warblers. The iconic Victorian Gothic dam is a Grade I listed building and the lake features a sculpture park with wooden carvings. Several free car parks are available around the lake (8am-6pm), with pay and display at the main car park (£2 for 2hr, £4 all day). The site is accessible all year round and dogs are welcome on leads.
