Planted by the Forestry Commission in the 1930s, Hafren Forest covers around 40 square kilometres and consists mainly of pine and spruce trees. It is managed by Natural Resources Wales (Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru) and offers a network of walking trails from an accessible cascades walk to the strenuous Source of the Severn trail. Highlights include the famous Severn-Break-its-Neck waterfall, Blaen Hafren Falls, and viewpoints over the river cascades. The forest is home to red kites and ospreys, and has picnic areas, toilets, and free parking at the Rhyd-y-benwch car park. The forest is the start point for the Wye Valley Walk, the Severn Way, and Sarn Sabrina long-distance walking routes. Also popular for mountain biking, horse riding, and motocross/rally events.
