Portstewart Strand and Barmouth Wildlife Reserve: Sweeping along the edge of the North Coast, this two-mile stretch of golden sand and sand dunes is an important nature conservation site. The dunes are a haven for wildflowers, butterflies, and birdlife. Way-marked trails take visitors through the dune system and along the Bann Estuary. Owned and managed by the National Trust, this precious habitat features wild pansy flowers, common blue and dark green fritillary butterflies, and is a sanctuary for waterfowl and wading birds.
Beach access is dawn to dusk year-round; the staffed facilities — car park, toilets, Changing Places — keep their own 10am-6pm day. The National Trust notes that opening times may vary with weather conditions, which on an exposed strand is a real risk rather than boilerplate.
