St Marys Island is a popular part-time tidal island off the coast of Whitley Bay, home to a Victorian lighthouse and a protected nature reserve. The causeway opens twice daily at low tide. Climb 137 steps for panoramic views of the North East coast. The Nature Reserve covers rock pools, clifftop grassland, a sandy beach and wetland habitats for wildlife spotting. The visitor centre has a shop with gifts and refreshments.
Opening hours vary with tides. Open daily May-October plus holidays and weekends at other times. Always check safe causeway crossing times.
