The Town Moor is an area of common land and public park in Newcastle upon Tyne covering around 1,000 acres (400 ha), making it larger than Hyde Park and Hampstead Heath combined. Dating back to the 12th century, this green space is a beloved local landmark where Freemen of the city still graze cattle. It features walking and cycling paths, hosts Newcastle's weekly Saturday parkrun and a junior parkrun (2 km for ages 4–14) every Sunday morning. The Town Moor is also home to The Hoppings, Europe's largest travelling fun fair, held annually in the last week of June, and the Newcastle Mela celebrating Asian cuisine, music and art over the August bank holiday. The Great North Run starts on the western edge of the moor. Adjacent to Exhibition Park, it offers wide open spaces ideal for running, walking, picnics, kite flying, and enjoying nature in the heart of the city.
