The Holy Island of Lindisfarne is a tidal island off the Northumberland coast, accessible via a causeway at low tide. This magical destination offers families a unique blend of outdoor adventure, history and natural beauty. Explore the dramatic ruins of Lindisfarne Priory (English Heritage), with its famous rainbow arch and family trails where kids can create their own Anglo-Saxon name stones. Climb up to Lindisfarne Castle (National Trust), a Tudor fort perched on a rocky crag with stunning coastal views. The island's sandy beaches are perfect for rock pooling, building sandcastles and flying kites. Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve protects tidal mudflats, salt marshes and dunes teeming with birdlife and grey seals. The island has charming cafes, pubs and the Lindisfarne Mead centre. Always check tide times before crossing the causeway.
The causeway floods at high tide, so make sure to check our opening times and the tide times before crossing to the island.
