Created in the 1930s, Riverside Park has been a popular destination for families and visitors. The park was redeveloped in the 1990s and now features artist-designed ornamental gardens, an events arena, a large play area, and a park centre with cafe and toilets. The park offers 5000 square metres of play area including a splash pad (open during summer months), zip line, and obstacle course. There are riverside walks along the River Wear, a wildlife area with pond and grassland meadow, and plenty of open space for picnics, kite flying, and ball games. The park also has a bowling club and Green Flag Award-winning gardens.
Splash pad open summer only (June-August approx). Toilets close earlier in winter (7:30am-2:30pm). Gardens follow same seasonal pattern.
