Mowbray Park is a historic municipal park in the heart of Sunderland, opened in 1857 and voted best in Britain in 2008. The park features a large Alice Through the Looking Glass-themed adventure play area for children with giant chess pieces and a distorted chequer board, a serpentine lake with three islands, a Victorian bandstand, bowling green, tennis court, and several listed statues and monuments including statues of Sir Henry Havelock, Jack Crawford, and John Candlish. A walrus sculpture by the lake celebrates the park's Lewis Carroll connections. The park hosts the annual Festival of Light and Christmas celebrations. Bordered by Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens to the north, Burdon Road to the west, Toward Road to the east, and Park Road to the south.
