The world's first iron bridge was erected over the River Severn here in 1779, cast by Abraham Darby III using 378 tons of iron from his Coalbrookdale foundry. This pioneering structure marked a turning point in English design and engineering; cast iron came to be widely used afterwards in bridges, aqueducts and buildings. The bridge gives its name to the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site, a wooded valley that was once at the heart of industry and engineering. It is wheelchair accessible and open during daylight hours. A conservation project in 2017–18 helped safeguard the historic ironwork.
