Cave Hill Country Park sits above Belfast with five caves cut into its cliffs, possibly ancient iron mines. The main draw is McArt's Fort, an ancient ráth standing 368 metres above sea level with panoramic views across the city. Three waymarked walking trails range from the short 0.8 mile Castle Trail through Belfast Castle gardens to the demanding 4.5 mile Cavehill Trail, which needs sturdy shoes and good fitness for its 256m ascent. The park's 2.4 mile Estate Trail follows woodland on the lower slopes. Beyond the trails, you'll find archaeological sites including a stone cairn and crannog, heath and moorland on the hilltop, meadows in Carr's Glen Linear Park, and woodland areas where cattle graze to help manage the habitat. Picnic areas are dotted throughout.
