A day out in Newcastle with a 1-3 year old
Open grass first, then a fenced playground and lunch, then a dark quiet room with the lights up a bit — a Newcastle day built around one toddler nap and very short walks between stops.
Toddlers walk best in the first hour of the day and worst after food, so this plan spends the fresh energy on open grass, keeps the fenced playground and lunch for the middle, and holds a sit-down indoor stop for the part of the afternoon when legs have gone. The first two stops are joined together — Exhibition Park sits on the south-eastern corner of the Town Moor — so you can start walking without committing to a distance and turn back whenever the mood changes. The fourth stop is there for weather, not for stamina.
Town Moor
Around 1,000 acres of common land, bigger than Hyde Park and Hampstead Heath combined, and the point of it for a one to three year old is that there is nothing to break and nowhere to be shepherded away from. Walking and cycling paths give you a firm surface for a buggy or a wobbly walker; the wide open spaces either side are for running in no particular direction, kite flying if there is wind, and looking at the cattle that Freemen of the city still graze here.
Do not plan a route. Pick a direction, let the child set the pace, and count on covering less ground than you expect. There are picnic spots if you want to eat early or feed a snack to stave off a meltdown.

Exhibition Park
The fenced children's playground is the reason this is the middle of the day: swings, slides, climbing frames and spring toys, with seating, and a fence between your child and everything else. After the unbounded moor, most toddlers settle better in an enclosure this size.
There is a park café, and picnic space if you have brought lunch. Also here: a miniature railway run by the Tyneside Society of Model and Experimental Engineers, a skatepark and basketball court to watch older kids on, a restored bandstand, and a former boating lake. The playground and outdoor gym equipment date from the park's 2015 refurbishment.
Lunch and the middle of the day
Tyneside Cinema
An Art Deco building in the city centre and a genuinely toddler-shaped afternoon option. Baby Club screenings are for parents with babies, run at reduced volume with the lights brighter, and include a hot drink and biscuits; Tyneside Kids Club screenings are the option for the older end of this age group. Relaxed Screenings are programmed for neurodivergent audiences.
A typical visit here runs to about two and a half hours across three screens, a bar café and other food and drink on site — so treat it as the end of the day rather than something to fit before another stop. Check what is actually programmed before you build the day around it.
Lunch and the middle of the day
Gosforth Leisure Centre (Gosforth Pool)
Held in reserve for rain, or for a day when a film is never going to happen. The Family Fun Swim sessions run in the teaching pool with toys and floats for babies and toddlers, which is the right water for this age — shallow, warm, separate from the 25-metre pool. Swim For All sessions keep fitness lanes on one side and open family space on the other. Budget around ninety minutes including changing, which with a toddler is most of it.
If the day is going badly, cut it after Exhibition Park; the playground and lunch are the parts a toddler will remember. If it rains from the start, do a short loop on the Town Moor paths, eat at Exhibition Park, and go straight to the pool or the cinema — pick one, not both.
