Ellenroad Engine House is a steam museum in a former cotton spinning mill engine house beside the M62 near Newhey. The centrepiece is a large twin tandem compound mill engine, which the volunteer Ellenroad Trust steams on selected open days so visitors can watch the great flywheel and rope drives turn. The site also houses other engines, including a beam engine and a generator, and the surviving mill chimney stands over the site. Families can look round the engine rooms, boiler house and workshop, and the café serves light refreshments. Open days often include special events and a classic car show, so a visit suits school-age children curious about machinery and local industrial history. Access is limited, and the site has a chair lift. School parties and groups are welcomed on weekdays by arrangement.

Opens for selected days in May and October; steaming days are not every open day.
