Portland Basin Museum is a local history museum set in a restored nineteenth-century canal warehouse beside the Ashton Canal. Families can walk down a recreated 1920s street, look into a kitchen and parlour showing how people lived, and see historic machinery and displays on the area's mining, farming, crafts and industry. Younger children have a Nuts and Bolts play area aimed at under-fives, and the museum runs trails and activities designed for children. Schools can book workshops, and a temporary exhibition changes the programme through the year. Outside, walking and cycling routes start from the building, so a visit can easily extend into a picnic or a stroll along the water.
