Stockport Museum tells the story of the town from the Palaeolithic period to the present day, spread over several exhibition floors in a historic building on Market Place. Displays include Iron Age finds from Mellor, medieval market life, the Victorian textile industry, the impact of the First World War, and the town's music and sport heritage. The museum has been reimagined for younger visitors with a brand new family gallery, where the character Museum Mouse leads children on an adventure to favourite objects in the collection. The layout has been reworked with clearer signage and a new orientation space at the entrance. Food and drink are not allowed in the gallery spaces, so families should plan to eat at the cafés in the Market Place nearby. Entry is free, which makes it an easy stop for a family spending a day in the town centre.
