Elizabeth Gaskell's House is a historic Victorian home in the Ardwick and Oxford Road area of Manchester, where the novelist lived with her family from 1850 until her death in 1865. The restored period rooms are furnished to look as they would have around the 1850s, and most of the collection can be touched, so it suits families who like hands-on history. Younger visitors can follow a children's trail led by the house cat, try dressing up in Victorian clothes, and use activity baskets. The Victorian-style garden has its own trail, and there are craft activities and games during school holidays. A volunteer-run tea room serves snacks and drinks, and visitors can bring a packed lunch. The house is small, so visits are by pre-booked timed entry, and the house is closed in the run-up to Christmas and early January.
Victorian Christmas Experience mid-November to 20 December; children's activities during school holidays.
