Pitsford Water is a 181-hectare nature reserve centred on a reservoir built in 1955. Walk the 7-mile circuit on grass paths (muddy in winter) and visit bird hides along the lakeshore. Four main streams create shallow bays that attract wildfowl in winter—up to 10,000 birds including wigeon, gadwall, teal and over 25 duck species. As water levels drop in summer, exposed mud supports migrating waders and unusual plants like orange foxtail and mudwort. The scrub and waterside margins shelter mammals including harvest mouse and badger, and over 40 bird species breed here. A feeding station offers views of tree sparrow and other small birds.
