Oldway Gardens is a 17-acre formal garden and parkland on the edge of Paignton town centre, laid out on an Italian theme around the former Singer family mansion. Families can wander the wide lawns, box-hedged terraces and tulip beds, and explore the lower grotto area, where there are waterfalls, hidden flights of steps and a fish pond. There is also a small hedge maze, and tennis courts sit alongside the main paths. The mansion itself has been closed to visitors for some years while restoration work is planned, so the outing is about the grounds rather than going inside the building. Access to the gardens is free, and the gardens are run largely by a volunteer group. It suits a relaxed walk, a picnic or a pram stroll, though younger children will need supervising around the steps and water features.
