Far Ings is a chain of flooded clay pits and extensive reedbeds along the Humber Bank, covering 59 hectares. The site has three waymarked visitor routes, a visitor centre with panoramic views across the reserve and estuary, bird hides including a double-decker hide at Ness End Farm, and a gift shop. Spring and autumn bring migrating pipits, finches, swallows, martins, swifts, larks, starlings, waders and wildfowl. In late summer the reedbeds host hirundine roosts. Autumn and winter are best for redshank, wigeon, black-tailed godwit, pink-footed geese and teal. Bitterns are present year-round and can be heard 'booming' from about March. Many paths suit wheelchairs (except closed gates when sheep are present), with disabled access to two bird hides, accessible toilets and baby changing.
Overwintering birds. In spring and autumn you can see migration in action. Bitterns on the reserve all year. Best time to visit January to December.
