Caister Roman Fort is the partly excavated remains of a fort built around AD 200 for a unit of the Roman army and navy. Visitors can walk among wall and ditch sections and the foundations of buildings, and picture the layout of a rectangular Roman fort with corner towers and gateways. The site is open grass, so it suits children who enjoy exploring, imagining Roman life and asking questions about the past. Finds from the site suggest that women and children lived inside the fort alongside the soldiers, which gives older children a human angle on the history. The site is managed by Great Yarmouth Borough Council with English Heritage. There are no buildings or facilities on site, so families should bring their own snacks and can use the amenities in the nearby village. Dogs on leads are welcome.
