Bancroft Mill Engine Museum is a volunteer-run working steam museum in a former cotton weaving mill on the edge of Barnoldswick. Its centrepiece is a large cross-compound engine built in 1920, which is brought up to steam on selected days so families can watch the great flywheel turn, hear the hiss and clank, and see the boiler house at work. Smaller engines, a working weaving loom that produces tea towels, and a collection of textile artefacts explain how the mill once ran. Children who enjoy machines and history tend to find plenty to look at, and there is an audio tour for self-guided visits. Quieter Saturday visits, when the engines are not running, suit families who find noise overwhelming. The site has a cafe and a gift shop on site.
Steaming days March to November; Saturday opening mainly March to November.
