Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo is an indoor tropical house where butterflies from around the world fly freely among plants, so visitors can walk among them at close range. The displays show the full life cycle, from eggs and caterpillars through chrysalises to adult butterflies, and the insects are bred on site. Because it is indoors, it suits wet or cold days in the Wye Valley as well as a short family visit. It sits inside the Wye Valley Visitor Centre at Symonds Yat, which also has a shop selling butterfly plants and wildlife books, a cafe, picnic areas, a hedge maze and miniature golf. Families who enjoy wildlife photography will find plenty to look at, and the operator also manages its own nature reserve and supports butterfly conservation.
Questions parents ask
- Is it suitable for buggies, and can I manage it with a toddler and an older child together?
- The zoo is entirely indoors in a tropical environment, which should make it manageable for families with children of different ages. However, we haven't confirmed whether buggies are practical in the space or how step-free access is throughout, so it's worth checking directly before you visit.
- How long should we allow for a visit?
- The page doesn't specify a typical visit length. You'll need to contact the zoo to find out how long families usually spend seeing the butterflies, chrysalises, caterpillars and eggs, and whether there's time to visit the shop.
- Is there somewhere to eat, or should we bring a picnic?
- There's a café at the venue, and there's also a picnic area if you'd prefer to bring your own food.
- Can we bring our dog?
- We haven't confirmed whether dogs are welcome, so do check with the venue before planning your visit.
